1 Define your goals
Before you start looking for a brand identity design service, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your brand. What is your mission, vision, and value proposition? Who is your target market and what are their needs, preferences, and pain points? How do you want to position yourself in the market and differentiate yourself from your competitors? What are the key messages and emotions you want to convey with your brand? Having a clear and consistent brand strategy will help you narrow down your options and communicate your expectations to the designers.

This step is fundamental and is a work of research and brand introspection that should be started even before identifying who will carry it out.Having a clear, direct and aligned briefing with the company is vital to guide the design team towards the creation of an identity that connects with your audience.Defining everything related to the new perspective that you want to give to the brand will set the guidelines for both design and the whole team when implementing the new identity internally in the company, as well as towards the community to which it is addressed.

First, define your brand values & target audience clearly. Then, look for designers who get your vision. Reviews matter, but personal connection is key. Save time: ask for portfolios upfront & go for quality over cost. Ensure they offer versatile designs for future scaling.

The most important part of this research is understanding your budget and the market for these services. You don't want to be surprised at the range of possibility of price point for branding services. You should know what the cheapest and most expensive option are. The second most important part of research is vetting designers for their process. Great designers have great process. Great process will be obvious after 15-20 minutes of interacting with them. Talk to 10 designers and one will likely stand out as having a far more professional process. Thats the one you want. They will definitely be more expensive, but they will also deliver above and beyond and take stress off of your plate. Its worth it.

After you have a shortlist of potential brand identity design services, you need to compare and contrast them based on your criteria and goals. You can contact them directly or request a proposal to get more information about their services, such as their scope, timeline, budget, feedback, revisions, and final files. You can also ask them questions about their approach, philosophy, and methodology, and how they can help you achieve your desired outcomes. You can also request samples, mockups, or references to see how they work and what they can deliver.

After narrowing down your options, compare them not just on price, but on value, process, and fit. Consider:- Value: What does each service offer within their package? Look for services like brand strategy sessions, logo design, color palette development, typography, and brand guidelines.- Process: Understand how they work. Do they have a collaborative approach? How do they handle feedback and revisions? This is crucial for ensuring a smooth journey.- Fit: The best partnerships feel right on a personal level. Do they understand your vision? Are they excited about your brand? It’s important that your designer or agency resonates with your startup’s ethos and values.

Once you've compiled a list of potential design partners, it's time to compare and contrast their offerings. Consider factors such as pricing, turnaround time, communication style, and the level of customization they offer. Look for a design partner who not only meets your budget and timeline but also shares your passion for your brand and is committed to bringing your vision to life.

Choose your "strategic partner" based on the quality of questions. How actively did they listen?. Did they help you articulate the problem more clearly? Did they help you uncover a problem, or problems that you didn't know you had? They should be able to offer insights and perspectives that you hadn't considered.Once you've found these unicorns, it's crucial that you are open to their creative process. While you know your business best, they know design and branding best. Trust their process.Remember, you're hiring an expert. This is a partnership where mutual respect and clear communication are key. Let them do their thing.

One of the key drivers of this process will be the degree to which you and your team are willing to rely on the recommendations and expertise of your selected design team. While we are the masters of our brands, designers possess technical and historical industry knowledge that brand managers would do well to utilize when creating a new visual product. One cannot overstate the impact and importance of industry trends and evolving design conventions when creating a brand. It could ultimately mean the difference between being perceived as cutting-edge industry disruptors, and an old-school institution of the past.

One of the things that will really help you build a great brand identity from scratch is writing a really good business plan. If you haven't done that, go do it. Even if and especially if you are already operating. Writing a really great business plan will prep you for hiring a brand designer.
