We want to highlight the groundbreaking work of STEM Education Researchers, and as part of this platform, Dr. Monica Miles had a conversation with Dr. Beronda Montgomery.Dr. Montgomery is a writer and scholar who pursues an understanding of how individuals perceive, respond to, and are impacted by the environments in which they exist. She is a Professor of Biology, and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Grinnell College. Her research is focused on the responses of photosynthetic organisms to external light cues. As R-RIGHTS, we strive to highlight the mental health and wellbeing of Black and historically minoritized individuals, and we are working towards creating a racially inclusive and equitable STEM ecosystem. This National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to examine the reasons behind the disproportionate mental health outcomes of minority communities, fight for equal and inclusive access to treatment, and #BreaktheStigma once and for all.

As we end #PrideMonth, we want to take a moment to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and the groundbreaking work of LGBTQ+ people in STEM. Dr. Clara Nellist writes, “When LGBTQ+ individuals are visible in the scientific community, it sends a powerful message of inclusivity and acceptance. It lets aspiring scientists know that their sexual orientation and gender identity do not hinder their potential for success in STEM fields. Visibility of LGBTQ+ scientists helps create a more equitable and diverse scientific landscape, leading to richer discoveries and innovations for the benefit of all humanity.” We want to share her video celebrating diversity in STEM.

Helen Keller was not only a strident advocate for people with disabilities, but was a suffragette, civil rights pioneer, and labor advocate. She co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union, was an opponent of lynchings and an early supporter of the NAACP, a strong proponent of women’s right to vote and make birth control decisions, and a champion for labor causes and worker’s rights.On June 27th, by Presidential proclamation, the anniversary of her birth is celebrated as #HelenKellerDay. We join in honoring her remarkable legacy.

“Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth".”#Juneteenth is a day to celebrate freedom and hope, as well as a day of remembrance. While the emancipation of enslaved African Americans is a story of progress and resilience, it also shines light on our country’s dark historic legacy. Today and every day, we are striving to achieve equality, celebrate diversity, eliminate systemic barriers, and take a race-conscious and inclusive approach to our work.
