This fantastic low sodium ketchup has no added salt, but all the amazing flavor of regular ketchup! I’m the ketchup lover of the house, I put it on everything: burgers, fries, hash browns, and almost any kind of meat or potato.

Commercial ketchups can contain added salt, so making my own version at home is essential for our low sodium lifestyle! The below recipe makes about 1 cup of ketchup, and it lasts for up to one week in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Why Make Salt-Free Ketchup At Home?

Ketchup is easy recipe to make with some panty staple ingredients, and it requires no stove top or microwave cooking! It has a really wonderful flavor from the tomato paste, vinegar, and brown sugar and honey which give it a nice sweetness.

Making your own ketchup at home is especially great because you can add in any additional spices you like! Want a spicier ketchup? Mix in some additional cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Want a less sweet ketchup? Skip the brown sugar or honey and add extra chopped garlic!

You can make this ketchup in one bowl, and serve it up for a crowd if you are having a barbecue. It’s inexpensive, simple, and a great alternative to store-bought ketchups!

  • Tomato Paste: makes thick ketchup with a deep bold tomato flavor. I only use a no salt added tomato paste, so you can control the amount of sodium in the recipe.
  • Brown Sugar: I like to use a dark brown sugar which gives the ketchup a really nice flavor.
  • Honey: I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. If you can’t find local, raw organic honey is a great option. I like to use both brown sugar and honey in this ketchup for the best consistency. You can substitute maple syrup as well if you don’t have honey on hand.
  • White Vinegar – I used a basic white vinegar, but you could also get creative and try out different flavored vinegars too: red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or even balsamic!
  • Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that gets used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I would use fresh garlic in too.
  • Onion Powder: adds a delicious and savory flavor to this dish as well.
  • Black Pepper
  • Cayenne pepper – optional, if you like spice! I added about 1/8 teaspoon in mine and it turned out great. If you like heat, you can add a little hot sauce or sriracha too!
